Geography of the Piedmont region

Piedmont is the second-largest of Italy's 20 regions, following Sicily. It is surrounded by the Alps to the north, the Apennines to the south, and the Po Plain to the east, and is bordered by France, Switzerland, and the Italian regions of Lombardy, Liguria, Aosta Valley, and Emilia Romagna. It is 43.3% mountainous, 26.4% plains, and 30.3% hills, with 7.6% of the region protected area and 56 national or regional parks.

The Po river is the largest in the region and, in fact, the largest in Italy. It begins in the Cottian Alps and comes out into the Adriatic Sea, passing throught Italy, Switzerland and France. Other main rivers include the Ticino, Tanaro, Dora Baltea (well known for its rafting), Sesia, Stura di Demonte, Bormida, Orco, Dora Riparia, Agogna, Cervo, Malone, Bormisa di Spigno, Bello, Sangone (a torrent river), Sessera and Soana rivers.
